Clinical bio
Hello! My name is Jonathan Atkinson, and I am an NC-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I am a graduate of Pfeiffer University with a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2021 and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a double minor in Sociology and Gerontology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2015. I have prior experience with older members of the blind and visually impaired community during my time working as a counselor at Camp Dogwood. I assisted the campers with their enjoyment of the camp through various activities, from arts and crafts to mini golf and the occasional trip to nearby museums. I completed my clinical internship at the Adult Rehabilitation Center of Charlotte, provided by The Salvation Army, assisting men with a better understanding of their anger and other emotions as they work through their recovery from addiction. I recognize the impact and role of addiction on the individual and the family system. I utilize elements of cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness with chakra awareness, Bowenian, Narrative, and structural-based therapy interventions with my clients. I enjoy introducing humor and awareness of the power of the breath to help my clients feel more at ease and comfortable during sessions. I know firsthand how difficult our relationship with our emotions can be when they feel so powerful. We have been conditioned by society to view our strong emotions as something scary and in need of protection from them. They can be scary, but they don't have to be if we give ourselves a chance to understand what is giving them fuel. After all, emotion is energy in motion. I enjoy working with teenagers, adults, and couples who are experiencing struggles as they attempt to work through the various challenges that come with life or living with anxiety and depression. When I am not working with clients, I enjoy spending time at the gym, hanging out with friends, enjoying the latest Marvel film, spending time in nature, and learning about cars and houses on YouTube.
